When we talk about hosting web servers, there are 3 main types - shared web hosting web servers, VPS (virtual web servers) and dedicated servers. Shared hosting web servers host a lot of clients and therefore the system resources per web hosting account are limited, VPS packages offer more configuration autonomy, but also influence other VPS web servers on the hardware node if used imprudently, and dedicated servers give you the independence to perform everything you choose without messing with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated server?

Dedicated servers are usually much more high-priced than shared web servers or VPS web servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The answer is very simple. If your corporation has a resource-requiring web portal, or just has very specific web server configuration requirements, the most relevant choice is a dedicated server. For someone who is prepared to invest in safety and stability, the greater price is of no concern. You are bestowed with complete root-level access and can utilize 100 percent of the hosting web server's resources without anyone else availing of these system resources and interfering with your sites.

Hardware configurations

The majority of hosting suppliers, incl. us at Lime Server, provide several different hardware architectures you can choose from in accordance with your requirements. The hardware configurations include different sorts of microprocessors, a different number of cores, different RAM and server hard disk drive sizes and different web traffic allowances. You can pick a Control Panel, which is a convenient GUI if you want to utilize the dedicated web hosting server for web hosting purposes only and prefer not to use an SSH console for all the modifications you will be making. We provide three sorts of web hosting CP software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The Control Panel of your preference

If you are a confident Linux user (our dedicated hosting web servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based OSs), you could manage your dedicated server via an SSH console exclusively. That, though, could be awkward, even more so if you wish to grant root-level access to someone else who has less technical expertise than yourself. This is why having web hosting CP software installed is a splendid idea. The Hepsia web hosting Control Panel graphical user interface that we offer does not include complete root-level access and is chiefly appropriate for someone who runs lots of web pages that consume plenty of system resources, but wants to manage the sites, databases and e-mailbox accounts using a user-friendly Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting CPs, on the other hand, give you full root-level access and include three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell web hosting accounts instead of utilizing the hosting server only for yourself, you should select one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated server and of backing it up. In case of a predicament with your web hosting server, such as a non-responsive Apache or a downtime, it is desirable to have some kind of monitoring system enabled. Here at Lime Server the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated server as well. Backups are also a bonus feature - the web hosting solutions provider offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could pick a kind of RAID that would permit you to store the same data on 2 hard drives as a precaution in case of a hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given root access erases something accidentally.
